The Garmin Forerunner 305

garmin_forerunner_305

I got the Garmin Forerunner 305 for my birthday and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

I’m currently training for my first 1/2 marathon at the end of September and needing something to boost my workouts and get me motivated. My Garmin has been my training partner since the day it came in the mail and I couldn’t be happier.

It tracks your mileage, heart rate, pace, has internal GPS, and can be connected straight to your computer to give you detailed charts of your stats. It has changed my running completely and was worth every penny. I love the fact that you can see your mile splits and check your speed to know whether you need to speed it up or slow it down a little. It has been so incredibly helpful in so many ways that it makes me wonder what I ever did without it.

I encourage any runner out there to try the Garmin Forerunner. It is a top notch product that I hope more people take advantage of. It will take your running to the next level.

The Bar Method Accelerated Workout

barmethod

I recently had the opportunity to try The Bar Method Accelerated Workout. It is taught by Burr Leonard, the founder of the Bar Method. Burr Leonard is 61 and is in the most amazing shape. I swooned over her long muscles and toned physique!

On the Bar Method website, the description of the worktout is:

“The Bar Method™workout creates a uniquely lean, firm, sculpted body by combining the muscle-shaping principles of isometrics, the body-elongating practice of dance conditioning, the science of physical therapy and the intense pace of interval training into a powerful exercise format that quickly and safely reshapes and elongates muscles.
The result is a noticeable “Bar Method” sculpted body featuring:

  • Firm
  • Elongated muscles
  • Reduced body fat
  • High muscle definition in the chest,
  • Upper arms and upper legs
  • Improved posture
  • Long, narrow thighs
  • A lifted seat and defined hamstrings
    Strong,
  • Flat abdominals
  • Increased stamina and energy
  • Extended youthfulness

The workout is similar to Core Fusionthat I had previously reviewed. This 56 minute dvd works muscles that you never even knew you had, targeting muscles like your triceps and inner thighs that leave you with a burning sensation that hurts but feels so good.

My triceps were sore for a few days after I had done the dvd. I love when you feel the burn and then know that your muscles are changing. In the dvd they use a bar, but you only need a sturdy chair or ledge to hold on to, a pair of small dumbells and a mat. The exercises are described well and are easy to learn, as well as having modifications shown throughout. If you think that this would be an easy workout, it’s quite the contrary.

Burr stresses the fact that you need to use small movements and stretching to create the long lean effect. The stretching portion is what molds your muscles. The movements may be small but they are mighty. I highly recomend you check out the dvd and try The Bar Method for yourself.

Take A Fit Vacation In Jamaica At The Couples Swept Away Resort!

2009-07-17_231631

About a week ago I was heading to the gorgeous island of Jamaica to teach fitness classes for a week at the all-inclusive Couples Swept Away Resort. Judging from the photo gallery from the resorts website, the resort looked beautiful, but it was even more amazing in person.

If you’re a fitness enthusiast who works out even on vacation, but dread going to the resort’s fitness facility that usually involves a couple of treadmills and weight machines in a white walled room, The Couples Swept Away fitness facility will blow your mind!

I never been to a resort that had a whole fitness facility on site – and when I say whole fitness facility I mean, they have a HUGE studio where fitness classes are held twice daily. There are cardio groove classes, spin classes, body pumping classes, yoga, pilates and of course reggae abs classes.

There’s also a weight machine room that is open (no windows or doors), a lap pool where aquacize classes are held or you could do just laps, tennis courts, squash courts and a pool table.

There’s also a guest tennis instructor each week that teaches tennis lessons. So whether you want to play on your own or learn how-to play, the choice is yours.

The fitness facility also has a health bar which has declicious fresh fruit smoothies, granola bar snacks, and fresh fruit infused water (and I don’t mean bottled!). They also serve coffee, water and other health drinks.

Near the health bar is a lounge area where the sports channel is constantly on, so for those men…or women, who want to keep up to date on their sports, can. There are also locker rooms with saunas and steam rooms for both men and women.

I’m telling you, if you and a loved one are looking for the perfect getaway, but must workout – this is the place! Even if you don’t workout, the resort is all-inclusive and is just amazing.

The couple staying next to our room told us they extended their stay because they loved it so much.

To learn more about the Couples Swept Away Resort visit www.couples.com.

Also, become a fan of their fitness club on Facebook, Couples Swept Away Fitness Club.

Walking May Save Your Life!

298x232-walking_workout-298x232_walking_workout

We all know that walking is great exercise, but for those of you with diabetes or blood sugar levels, walking could very well save your life! JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School says,

“Walking is one of the best types of ‘medicine’ we have to help prevent diabetes, or reduce its severity and potential complications–such as heart attack and stroke–if you already have it.”

The Harvard Nurses’ Health Study recently found that a mere 30 minutes of brisk walking could cut women’s risk for diabetes by up to 30%!

What’s more, walking also fights off build-up of fat around the abdomen. The reason excess fat is so harmful is because it causes inflammation in cells and makes them resistant to insulin, the hormone that mediates blood sugar.

Luckily, Prevention put together a walking workout routine complete with a few options so you won’t get bored! Debbie Bouldin, 48, tried the workout (called DTOUR) and lowered her blood sugar by 23 points in just 6 weeks! She says,

“I haven’t felt this good since I was in my 20s.”
